April's Trading Card and Equinox Contest News

Fact-Simile Editions is pleased to announce the 4th installment in our 2010 Literary Trading Card Series; poet, author, playwright, librettist, and presidential candidate: Eileen Myles!

In other news: after an exhausting month of preparing for, enjoying and winding down from AWP, we are finally starting to get caught up on our stack of reading materials for Fact-Simile 3.1 Spring/Summer 2010. If you have yet t receive a response, rest assured that your work is still under consideration.

We're also very excited about all the amazing chapbook submissions we've been receiving for our annual Equinox Chapbook Contest. The deadline for submissions is May 1, so there's still time to send in your manuscript. Submission guidelines are available here.

Sonnet 86

I was feeling a little stuck with this translation project I'm working on and was looking for some inspiration this evening in, of all places, my Dover Thrift Edition of Shakespeare's Sonnets, when I discovered the original photograph above (of Robert Creeley and Bobbie Louise Hawkins) marking sonnet 86. My best guess is, I picked the book up in Boulder at a second-hand bookshop where it had found its way from the collection of Bobbie Louise. In the spirit of serendipity, I would like to share with you the sonnet 86:

Was it the proud full sail of his great verse,
Bound for the prize of all-too-precious-you,
That did my ripe thoughts in my brain inhearse,
Making their tomb wherein they grew?
Was it his spirit, by spirits taught to write
Above a mortal pitch, that struck me dead?
No, neither he, nor his compeers by night
Giving him aid, my verse astonished.
He nor that affable familiar ghost
Which nightly gulls him with intelligence,
As victors, of my silence cannot boast;
I was not sick of any fear from thence.

But when your countenance fill'd up his line,
Then lack'd I matter; that enfeebled mine.

Announcing The Equinox Chapbook Series

Fact-Simile Editions is pleased to announce the official release of our first annual Equinox Chapbook Series. This project has been more than 8 months in the making so, without further delay or undue ceremony, I give you:

The winner of Fact-Simile's Equinox Chapbook contest, Point of Intersection is a 4.5" x 6.5" portfolio style chapbook consisting of 12 new poems from Buffalo poet Joseph Cooper. Each unique book is hand-bound in scarred and branded leather. Point of Intersection was printed in an edition of 100 with additional vegan copies available while supplies last.


Brooklyn poet Matt Reeck's midwinter, runner-up in Fact-Simile's 2009 Equinox Chapbook contest, is a 6 foot long accordion folded text with accompanying magnifying glass. midwinter bound in hand stamped bookboard and printed in a limited edition of 45.


Some Colors Will Touch Regardless is an elegant Japanese-bound collection of cascading hand-colored pages from Colorado poet Travis Cebula. Runner-up in Fact-Simile's Equinox Chapbook contest, this limited edition of 30 books is bound by a single string of waxed thread in a heavy black folio.
